Filey is the perfect place for a relaxing seaside break from the city. The former fishing village is now a popular seaside destination with an impressive 5 mile sandy bay. There is plenty to do in Filey and the surrounding area.
Things To Do
Filey beach was named one of the Sunday Times Best Beaches 2023. The perfect place for stroll, ice cream and sandcastle building. Grab a drink at The White Lodge or stop at Angela's tearoom for cream tea.
Hunmanby Gap
A short drive just under 4 miles from Filey this is a small stretch of sand, nice in the summer months to escape the crowds.
Cayton Bay
In-between Scarborough and Filey, Cayton bay is just over 4 miles from Filey and has a wide sweeping bay, affordable parking and great facilities.
Scarborough
7.7 miles from Filey. North Bay is a sandy beach with rocky outcrops to the north which becomes isolated at high tide and provides brilliant rock pool areas at low tide. Don't forget to check out Scarborough Castle or a spa treatment at The Crown Spa hotel.
You can find additional beaches at Bridlington (11 miles), Robin Hood's Bay (24 miles) and Whitby (27 miles), check out Falling Foss tea garden, or stop for fish & chips at The Magpie Cafe.
On your doorstep you can take a lovely breezy walk to Filey Brigg. It is a site of Special Scientific Interest because of its geological importance and is designated as a local Nature Reserve.
Filey Gin Distillery
Distilled and bottled in a 160-year-old former herring smokehouse in Filey. Just 3mins walk, you can book tours and tastings here
Filey Museum
Around the corner you'll find one of the oldest buildings in Filey, dated 1696. Packed with local history and run by volunteers. Check out the opening times here.
Filey Bird and Animal Park
A family-run attraction with a mixture of animals and nature. More details and tickets here.
Iconic lighthouse, amazing views over the north sea and the wildlife that live on and around the scenic white cliffs. Roughly 20mins drive from Filey. Nesting puffins can be seen from the cliff tops from mid May to mid July.
RSPB Bempton Cliffs
One of the UK's top wildlife spectacles and the most accessible seabird colony in the UK. Approx 18mins drive. Six, safe viewpoints perch on the cliff tops and give incredible views of the nesting birds and along the impressive coastline.
Spirit of Yorkshire
Yorkshire's first ever single malt whisky distillery. Situated in Hunmanby, approx 10 mins drive. There is an onsite cafe, we'd recommend booking as it can get very popular in peak season. They do a great afternoon tea and tours with tastings. More information here.
Wold Top Brewery
Just 16 mins drive away you can visit Wold Top brewery, where they have a lovely bar and brewery tours. Book here.
Scarborough Open Air Theatre
Since its official re-opening, the Scarborough OAT has played host to some of the music industry's biggest stars. The venue is seasonal and you can book tickets here
Further Afield
Pick up the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the train departs from Pickering. Book tickets here.
Head to Helmsley for afternoon tea and visit Helmsley Castle.
Flamingo Land (near Pickering) is the nearest theme park.
Near Malton, Yorkshire Lavender is great in summer months, and Castle Howard for picnics or cosy winter events. Further away you'll find York which makes a lovely day out.
Stately homes can be found less than 30mins drive away at Sewerby Hall and Sledmere House.
Places to Eat and Drink
Filey has some great places to eat and drink, from afternoon tea spots to takeaway fish & chips. We'd recommend making reservations in advance to avoid disappointment.
The Lighthouse tearoom serve a great afternoon tea, or opt for brunch at Thirty Coffee shop and try their locally roasted coffee Waves.
The Station, The Star, La Gondola and Bella Italia are just moments from the flat. A firm favourite is the The Piebald Inn in Hunmanby serving 52 types of pie. A short drive away you'll find Betton Farm tearooms (near East Ayton) and restaurant which offers people with learning disabilities work experience.
If you fancy Fish & Chips, a family favourite is The Brown Room, Union St and Dickie Bees, Mitford St. Around the corner from the flat there is a little takeaway called Lite Bites for reasonably priced sandwiches. We'd recommend Filey Deli on Belle Vue St for speciality cakes and pies.

Unfortunately the Yorkshire Coast is a bit behind the rest of the country with EV chargers. However, there are a few available.
McDonald's Scarborough, near Morrisons. This has a couple of InstaVolt 120kW chargers.
Pavillion Square Car Park, Scarborough. This has 4x 150kW chargers. Make sure to pay attention to the signs, as you may have to pay for parking while charging!
